Certified Diamonds
IGI and GIA certification, the 4Cs explained, and how to read the report that comes with your stone.
Every diamond we set above 0.30ct ships with an independent certificate — IGI or GIA, never an in-house grading. The certificate is issued by a third-party gemological lab that has no financial stake in the sale, which is the entire point of asking for one.
The 4Cs, and which ones actually matter
- Cut
- The only C decided by human skill rather than the stone’s natural formation. It determines whether a diamond returns light or looks flat. We never compromise here, regardless of budget.
- Colour
- Graded D (colourless) to Z. D–F is colourless; most people can’t see a difference against white metal until around H, and warmth hides well in yellow gold.
- Clarity
- Graded FL (flawless) to I3. We recommend VS1–VS2 — nothing visible to the naked eye, without paying a premium for perfection under a jeweller’s loupe.
- Carat
- Weight, not size. A well-cut 0.90ct stone often faces up larger than a poorly cut 1.00ct, and costs meaningfully less.
Reading your certificate
Your report lists the stone’s measurements, cut grade, colour and clarity grade, fluorescence, and a unique report number. On stones above roughly 0.30ct, that same number is laser-inscribed on the girdle — the thin edge running around the diamond — invisible to the eye but visible under 10x magnification, which is what any jeweller uses to confirm the certificate belongs to the stone in front of them.
Coloured stones
Emeralds, rubies and sapphires carry a GRS or GTL report instead, which additionally states whether the stone has been treated — oiled, heated, or untreated — since treatment materially affects both value and care requirements. We disclose this on the invoice, not just the certificate.
Polki and uncut diamonds
Polki doesn’t carry a 4C grade, because there’s no cut to grade against — it is the diamond as it came out of the earth, cleaved and polished but never faceted. It’s valued instead on size, evenness of colour, and the quality of the kundan setting around it.
